Maher is dedicated to the fight to establish legal, social and economic protections for employees in Egypt’s informal sector, particularly quarry workers and fisherman, as a first step toward guaranteeing basic rights to all the workers in Egypt. He is the Executive Director and Founder of the Better Life Association for Comprehensive Development in Minia, an organization started in 2007 that addresses injustices against people who fish and their families.
The project is currently working with five fishing communities around the Nile. Better Life Association for Comprehensive Development teaches fishers about the dangers of overfishing and safe fishing practices and teaches the community about the environment, their health, and literacy skills. The organization also educates the communities about networking and exchange of expertise programs, and works to solve problems around work permits, social security, discrimination (gender and class), obtaining fishing supplies, housing, sanitation, electricity, land, access to government resources, health insurance, advocacy, and living in a hygienic matter.
