Understanding Social Justice Philanthropy | January 2003

This paper compiled by the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP) gives recommendations for how foundations can engage in social justice philanthropy as a means of giving for positive structural change as opposed to giving for charity purposes. NCRP believes social justice philanthropy involves creating a more equitable distribution of power by working to solve society's problems at their source. This paper draws on various definitions of social justice philanthropy, surveys grantmaking institutions and builds on the findings of case studies in the hopes of helping foundations build more democratic relationships.
