Marieke Spence

Marieke Spence is a Senior Manager of the Global Philanthropists Circle, based in New York, where she supports highly engaged philanthropic families to increase their effectiveness and impact towards a more just, equitable, and sustainable world.

Prior to joining the GPC team in February 2017, Marieke was a Senior Consultant at TCC Group, a management consulting firm focused on social impact. In this role she developed strategies and programs to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of foundations, nonprofits, and corporate community involvement programs. Marieke’s interest in impact investing has led to fellowships at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Criterion Institute and her thought leadership on impact investing and philanthropy has been published in the Stanford Social Innovation Review, The Foundation Review, and GrantCraft. She is co-author with Jacob Harold, Joshua Spitzer, and Jed Emerson of “Environmental Impact Investing: Co-Managing the Ecological and Economic Household,” published in Social Finance (Oxford University Press, 2016).

Marieke was formerly Director of Corporate Communication and Strategy at The Kessler Group; producer of On Point with Tom Ashbrook, a nationally-syndicated news and current affairs program on National Public Radio; and Assistant Director of Communications at the Council on Foreign Relations. Marieke holds a MALD in International Business and Communication from The Fletcher School at Tufts University and a BA from Brown University. She has completed coursework at Oxford University’s Said Business School and the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Marieke is passionate about the arts and is an active (amateur) pianist and lapsed violist. She serves on the board of Exploring the Metropolis, an NYC-based nonprofit working to foster a vibrant and prolific performing arts community around shared resources of space and talent.
