Fairouz Omar Mohamed

Synergos Social Entrepreneur & Founder, Qalb Kabir

Through Fairouz's organization Qalb Kabir or “big heart”, Fairouz has introduced a professional psychological counseling system that is both interactive and preventative for teenagers attending Egyptian government schools. Founded in 2004, Qalb Kabir targets children from ages of 13 to 16 and has proven successful as students who have been through her program have scored higher on standardized exams. Additionally, Fairouz has rehabilitated and trained all 95 counselors recruited by the Ministry of Education, and has implemented on the job-training and coaching programs for counselors in seven pilot schools.

Working alongside the Egyptian Ministry of Education, the program adopts a three-part system that addresses the emotional difficulties of youth by fostering the skills of counselors who are already working in schools, teaching parents and school administration the importance of in-school counselors, and instilling respect for counselors within the student population. Using Person-Centered Therapy (PCT), the program also teaches counselors to show genuineness, empathy, and conditional positive regard towards a client, which creates a supportive and non-judgmental environment.

Other components of the program include a one-year self-discovery program that teaches individuals who are interested in applying Fairouz’s techniques and counseling methods to their own organizations, and manuals used to replicate the system in public schools all over Egypt.
