Beatriz Azeredo

Beatriz Azeredo is Director of the Instituto Desiderata in Brazil, a foundation focusing on Rio de Janeiro’s low-income inhabitants.

Dr. Azeredo is also a professor at the Institute of Economics of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, as well as Director of the Center for Studies on Public Policies, which coordinates research, evaluation and formulation of social programs. She is also consultant with the Kellogg Foundation, on a program in northeast Brazil that bolsters local development projects for the region’s youth.

Previously, Dr. Azeredo served as the Director of the Social Development Area of the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES, 1996-2003). In this capacity she was responsible for determining and implementing financing programs in various areas, including health and education, urban infrastructure, and micro-finance.

Dr. Azeredo’s professional involvement with social policies began in 1985, when she started working in research and assessment of public policies and programs, and participated in the determination and regulation of new laws. She was a member of the Brazilian Constitution Committee (1987-1988) and served as technical advisor to the Brazilian House of Representatives. In this capacity, she worked in the team that regulated the new Brazilian Constitution, focusing particularly on legislating Brazil’s social policies.

Dr. Azeredo has a PhD in economics from the Post-Graduation Program of the Economics Institute at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Founded in 2003, the Instituto Desiderata aims to contribute to the personal development of children and young people and, in particular, to improve the treatment and cure of paediatric cancers. The organization finances projects of non-profit partner organizations, promotes the development and diffusion of social technologies, builds alliances, and contributes to strengthening the institutional structure of its partner organizations.
