Events of the last year and a half have shown the deep connections between poverty and insecurity. Globalization is producing tremendous wealth for many people in many parts of the world. Yet poverty remains -- and in some cases is exacerbated by increasing global integration. And with poverty come suffering and, too often, violence and insecurity. Since 1997, Synergos has convened University for a Night to bring about broad dialogue to address pressing social issues. The 2002 event brought together over three hundred people from 20 countries, representing government, business and civil society to share experience and ideas about the question "How can we bridge social and economic divides in a globalizing world?"
This report presents the remarks of the plenary speakers -- Bill Harrison of J.P. Morgan Chase, Helio Mattar of Brazil's Abrinq Foundation for the Rights of Children, Thoraya Ahmed Obaid of the United Nations Population Fund and Tokyo Sexwale of South Africa's Mvelaphanda Holdings -- as well as key recommendations from the discussions that followed the plenary. We hope that you find the recommendations informative, that you make direct use of those which pertain to your work, and that you share them with your colleagues and friends. Synergos thanks all of the event participants and supporters, and in particular University for a Night's Foundation Sponsor, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., our Leadership Sponsors Bristol-Myers Squibb and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Government of Sweden for hosting the event. Thanks also to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, for his remarks and continued support. Finally, we very much hope you will join us at University for a Night 2003, which will focus on the theme "Building Common Ground to Bridge Social and Economic Divides", on November 6 at the United Nations in New York. Sincerely,
