The theme of University for a Night 2001 was this question:

What can concerned citizens, corporations, governments and international agencies do to extend the fruits of globalization to the poor as well as the rich?

No doubt the globalization of investment, production, trade and finance and the accelerating global movement of information, ideas and people has yielded huge economic benefits and spurred technological growth. But it has also been accompanied by and appears to be contributing directly to a persistent deepening of poverty, both within and between nations. Why? And how can this be countered?

Plenary Speakers
University for a Night 2001 opened with plenary remarks from:

  • Maria Isabel Baquerizo de Noboa, First Lady of Ecuador
  • Marian Wright Edelman, Founder & President, Children’s Defense Fund
  • Louise Frechette, Deputy Secretary General
    The United Nations
  • Phil Watts, Group Managing Director & Chairman Designate
    Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Companies.
The plenary was co-hosted with the Mission of the Republic of South Africa to the United Nations.

Roundtables
Following the Plenary, University for a Night participants met at dinner roundtables to discuss specific topics. At each roundtable, two "Distinguished Faculty" -- outstanding experts or practitioners in the subject matter -- opened the dialogue. Participants then exchanged views and experience about the topic in order to develop specific acton recommendations.

A report on the evening, with recommendations from the roundtable discussions and text of the plenary remarks, is being prepared.
