Selection Criteria: What is a Social Innovator?

The five main criteria listed below describe the qualities and characteristics that Synergos uses to define a Social Innovator. All candidates will be evaluated against the core selection criteria during the review period and those not meeting all five criteria will be ineligible for the Program.

  • Innovative Idea: Social innovators must possess a creative idea, solution or approach to a social, economic, environmental or other problem that will make an impact on the alleviation of poverty and inequity.
  • Innovative Quality: Social innovators must be driven by a vision to promote social progress and break old patterns of action and perception. S/he will persevere to refine, test and spread a remarkable new idea, methodology or approach to improve the quality of life for people in their community and beyond.
  • Collaborative and Inclusive Approach: Social innovators must demonstrate a commitment to participating in and developing partnerships in the communities they serve and working with other civil society organizations, businesses, and government to address issues related to poverty and inequity.
  • Ethical Values: Social innovators must be persons who have demonstrated a commitment to and who model high ethical standards. Candidates will not be considered who advocate any form of discrimination against race, ethnicity, sex, religion, age, or disability.
  • Social Impact of the Innovation: Social innovators must lead social innovations that have demonstrated positive social change and impact at a local level with the potential for replication in other communities and/or expansion to a national level.

Program Guidelines

Please carefully review the program guidelines below to better assess whether you and your social innovation are eligible for the Program.

Will Be Considered Will Not Be Considered
Social innovators working in the non-profit or private sectors. Social innovators who are government officials or employees.
Social innovations and innovators active in one of the following five program areas:
  • Egypt
  • Jordan
  • Lebanon
  • Morocco
  • Palestine.
Social innovations and innovators not operating in any of the five designated program areas.
Social innovations whose goal is to reduce poverty and inequity and which have as a focus any number of fields, including but not limited to:
  • economic, social and sustainable development
  • health
  • education
  • culture.
Social innovations that do not place priority on reducing poverty and inequity.
Social innovation projects that are environmentally responsible. Social innovations that pose harm to the environment or incorporate methods that are environmentally damaging.
Social innovations with a proven track record.
Synergos does not require each social innovation to be in operation for a specific length of time because of the uniqueness of every project. However, social innovations must be operating long enough to have proven their success at solving a social, economic or environmental problem. We are looking for projects that demonstrate positive social change at a community level and need additional professional and financial support to develop, strengthen and expand.
Social innovations with no proven track record.
Social innovations at a beginning stage of development with a limited operational history and no record of success at solving a social, economic or environmental problem. We will not consider social innovations that have no documented social impact at the community level.
Social innovations that show the potential for significantly greater impact, through replication to other communities and/or expansion nationally. Social innovations that have already reached a large scale.

Program Requirements: What is required of a Social Innovator?

During the course of the three-year Program, Social Innovators must:

  • be willing and able to participate in Synergos' global network of civil society leaders, partners and Senior Fellows. This involves limited travel to and participation in regional and/or international meetings and workshops.
  • have a basic knowledge of the English language and work towards improving their English language skills. Candidates should be able to engage in active conversation in English in order to benefit from being connected to Synergos' global network of partners, take advantage of peer learning and training opportunities and participate actively in international meetings and workshops. English language training will be part of individual development plans for Social Innovators who need to improve their English language skills.
  • Understand, respect and operate within the framework of Synergos' mission, vision and values.
