Abstract
This speech, by Synergos Senior Fellow and Senior Advisor Shannon St. John, was presented at an event hosted by the community foundation Instituto Comunitario Grande Florianopolis (ICom) in Brazil. In the speech, St. John highlights the role of community foundations as the creators of a community philanthropic culture. She begins discussing the worldwide movement of community foundations by recalling the first community foundation of the United States, then the community foundation for which she is the founding CEO, and finally to ICom in Brazil. Following this she argues that the rise of community foundations echoes a number of global trends such as the emergence of newly democratic states. St. John then illuminates the three vital characteristics to community foundations she has witnessed from her experience working in numerous countries. She closes by emphasizing the impat community foundations can have by educating their communities on philanthropy and remarks on how donor education can increase philanthropic engagement.
