Community Foundations: A Gently Shifting Model By Monica Patten | March 2006 | View Full Text
Abstract
This article on community foundations by Senior Fellow Monica Patten was originally published in Alliance magazine. The article addresses how community foundations models have worked in various locations to effectively bring communities together and make a sustainable difference and impact. She says the combination and interdependence of the roles of community foundation are what make it different from other fundraising institutions. Patten remarks on the difference in approach of Canadian foundations, in comparion with US foundations, is largely due to historical emphasis on 'the group' and the encouragement of collective action. She also notes the importance of the voice local community foundations can offer in the midst of globalization.
