The 2007-2008 Crisis in Kenya
Remarks by Dr. Mary Nyamongo

On February 5, 2008, Dr. Mary Amuyunzu-Nyamongo, Executive Director of the African Institute for Health and Development and a Synergos Senior Fellow, met with members of the Global Philanthropists Circle and Synergos Senior Fellows to share her view on the recent election in Kenya and the violence that followed it. She highlighted the impact the unrest has had on the communities in which she works, as well as her views on the underlying causes of the ethnic divide and what is needed for a peaceful path forward.

This special meeting was one of several ways we are connecting members of our networks to communities on the ground in Kenya. A group of Global Philanthropists Circle members were due to visit Kenya in March but the visit was postponed due to the post election turmoil. To learn about the many innovative approaches to addressing poverty that exist there in both urban and rural area, please see the virtual tour of the organizations that were to be featured.
