Kenya Learning Visit

In March 2008 a group of Global Philanthropists Circle members had plans to visit Kenya to learn about the many innovative approaches to addressing poverty that exist there in both urban and rural areas (view trip agenda).

In addition to a variety of noteworthy international and national initiatives, Kenya has its own rich tradition of community philanthropy or harambee, where community members can rely on each other to help out in a time of need. On our trip we were scheduled to visit a number of these ground-breaking, effective approaches in the areas of health, water, education, environment and microenterprise.

Following the post-election violence, the Kenya Learning Visit was postponed. (Video of a presentation on that violence by Dr. Mary Nyamongo of African Institute for Health in Kenya is online.)

We have put together a "virtual tour" of the organizations that were featured, including the projects of GPC members Ray Chambers, Al and Diane Kaneb, Chris Mathias, Alejandro Ramirez, Christopher Stone and Jon Stryker, so Circle members can still learn about them and connect to them.

The map at right contains profiles of these groups and links to their organizations. Those organizations are also listed below. If you should need any additional information, we would be happy to connect you.
