Website for Canadian nonprofit organizations and philanthropists with global interests
Canadian attorney Mark Blumberg has created a website, globalphilanthropy.ca, that aims to help Canadian individuals and nonprofit organizations that work, or hope to work, in international development, relief or education understand legal, ethical and practical issues they may face. It also provides information for international organizations considering operating or fundraising in Canada. The site includes detailed articles and blog postings on topics such as how to set up a charitable organization, creating a planned giving program, tax law in Canada, and the scale and scope of international giving by Canadians. The website also compiles listing of Canadian nonprofit organizations operating in other countries.
Alliance magazine launches new website and Spanish-language material
Alliance magazine has redesigned its website at www.alliancemagazine.org to include offerings in Spanish that are free-of-charge to readers in Latin America and available by subscription to readers elsewhere. The September issue of the magazine includes a special feature examining the concept of “philanthrocapitalism” and its implications for donor control and agenda-setting. In an introductory article, Barry Knight and Caroline Hartnell argue that many of these issues have already been examined in other forms of donor-recipient relations, with useful lessons emerging. The issue also includes some profiles of groups in the developing world, such as TrustAfrica and the African Women’s Development Fund, that have been successful in negotiating with northern donors on their own terms. Other articles in this issue include an interview with Luis Ubiñas, new President of the Ford Foundation, and examination of the challenges facing organizations that monitor foundations by Rick Cohen.
