New manual examines franchising in the nonprofit sector
Social Franchising -- A Way of Systematic Replication to Increase Social Impact, published by the Association of German Foundations in cooperation with the International Centre for Franchising and Cooperation, is a new manual looking at ways in which the method of franchising, popular in the service sector of businesses, can be adapted to the nonprofit social sector. The manual is part of the Social Franchise Project, which the Association of German Foundations is carrying out in cooperation with six major European foundations. According to Hans Fleish, Secretary General of the Association, "Financial, human and other resources to address global challenges are becoming scarcer. While we should in general try and increase resources by creating a favorable environment in which foundations can become more involved, we must at the same time ensure that available resources are used more effectively and efficiently. Social franchising -- the replication of successful projects in order to increase social impact -- is a viable way to do that." For more information, visit www.stiftungen.org/social_franchise.

June 2008 issue of Alliance examines individual philanthropy
Guest edited by Peggy Dulany (founder and Chair of Synergos), Adele Simmons (President of the Global Philanthropy Partnership and Co-Editor of Global Giving Matters) and Aurora Tolentino (Executive Director of the Asia Pacific Philanthropy Consortium and a Synergos Senior Fellow), the June issue of Alliance (www.alliancemagazine.org) contains a special section looking at individual giving and how to make it work for both donors and recipients. It includes interviews with donors all over the world, including Global Philanthropists Circle members José Ignacio Avalos of Mexico, Theo Tobé of the Netherlands, Cherie Nursalim in Indonesia and Ikram Mian of Pakistan. It also includes articles looking at new developments in donor services, the role of pooled funds and other intermediary organizations and thoughts on what makes a donor-grantee relationship work. The section also includes perspectives from nonprofit organizations on donor involvement in the projects they support, sharing the positives of working with individual donors as well as cautionary tales.
