Arab World Social Innovators Program Intern

The Synergos Institute is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to the development of effective, sustainable and locally based solutions to poverty. Working with partners, Synergos' mission is to mobilize resources and bridge social and economic divides to reduce poverty and increase equity around the world.

Synergos currently runs three programs in the Middle East/North Africa Region:

    The Synergos Arab World Social Innovators program is a three-year initiative launched in October 2007. Its purpose is to promote social change by identifying and supporting social innovators engaged in social and sustainable development, health and education, and human rights. The program's target areas are Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Palestine. This fall Synergos announced their second class of Arab World Social Innovators.   • The Mobaderoon Masr (Pioneers of Egypt) program represents an investment in Egypt’s new leaders who have a key role to play in building the future of their country. The goal of this program is to contribute to a successful transition to democracy and economic prosperity in Egypt by expanding employment and self-employment opportunities, particularly for youth, and supporting the new generation of civil society and business leaders.
  • The Alliance for Social Entrepreneurship has been created to bring together a network of leading organization in the social entrepreneurship movement. The Alliance is aimed at supporting a more robust social entrepreneurship movement. The first two countries the Alliance will work in are Lebanon and Egypt.

Synergos seeks an intern in its New York City office to provide programmatic and communications support for the above three programs. The internship requires a time commitment of 10 to 15 hours per week. A small stipend is available.

Responsibilities

  • Research the social entrepreneurship landscape in the Middle East/North Africa
  • Maintain communications with local partners
  • Support program offerings for social entrepreneurs
  • Organize visits and program-related meetings
  • Organize and update program documentation
  • Coordinate communications between program staff and consultants in New York and the Middle East.

Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of and experience in the Middle East/North Africa region, particularly the program's target areas
  • Fluent in English; fluency in Arabic highly desirable
  • Prior experience in international development
  • Cultural adaptability and ability to interact and function effectively within a multicultural setting
  • Strong communication skills
  • Well-organized and detail-oriented
