Karim Mostafa co-founded Gaia for Solar Energy Systems with a vision to tackle critical development problems through creative engineering solutions that harness the country’s most plentiful natural resource: solar energy. Even in a country famous for the longest river in the world, people in many areas of Egypt don’t have access to sufficient clean drinking water. To address this problem, Gaia has designed a portable, solar-powered water desalination unit able to provide fresh, safe water to those in the most inaccessible parts of the country. Additionally, Gaia offers portable solar energy units which provide electricity to those not connected to the central grid. By installing these stand-alone units, communities in overlooked, distant regions are given the opportunity to improve their standard of living in an environmentally sustainable fashion. Karim’s products illustrate the tremendous potential for solar energy to transform Egypt’s future.
