Hemmat Salah Eldin

Inspired by her upbringing in the Egyptian countryside and her close relationship with nature, Hemmat Eldin established Turathiyat for the Development of Creative Skills. Turathiyat offers a creative solution to two seemingly unrelated problems facing rural Egypt: female unemployment and agricultural waste. After harvesting dates from palms, farmers typically burn excess material from the trees, damaging both the environment and people’s health. Turathiyat makes use of this waste material by teaching women how to make products using the leftover date palm fronds. This simple, innovative approach provides women with the opportunity to earn a living through the sale of their products while at the same time improving the natural environment around them.
