Hany El Miniawy

Synergos Social Entrepreneur & Founder, Center for Appropriate Development Architecture & Planning Technologies

Hany El Miniawy develops appropriate technology that allows low income communities to move out of substandard housing and into higher quality, economical residences. Hany established the Center for Appropriate Development Architecture & Planning Technologies, which focuses on improving the materials and techniques that people use when constructing housing, community facilities, and other public spaces. Hany tries to ensure that communities have access to the local resources necessary to construct their own secure, affordable buildings.

At each site, he begins by lab testing the soil to find needed materials such as stone and clay. Then he develops site specific, environmentally friendly formulas to make durable bricks for construction.

In collaboration with construction professionals, he instructs youth and interested individuals on how to build safe, inexpensive buildings in their communities. He has already implemented his method in Manshiet Nasser in Cairo and Boul El Dakrour in Giza, impacting more than 2 million individuals.
