Help Families Rebuild from Floods in Santa Catarina, Brazil

Floods caused by intense rains in the state of Santa Catarina have caused extensive damage -- destroying houses and whole communities -- and have killed at over 100 people and left thousands of people homeless. Emergency squads are working intensively and are receiving in kind-donations that are providing some relief.

But more support is needed -- not just for relief but for longer-term recovery.

Instituto Comunitário Grande Florianópolis (ICom), a nonprofit organization founded by Synergos Senior Fellow Lúcia Dellagnelo, has established a Community Reconstruction Fund to provide low-income families, particularly those led by women, with funding and planning assistance to start rebuilding their homes.

Women and families who receive resources from the Fund will be oriented to account for the use of the resources through a simple report. Professionals from ICom will also provide other types of support to the beneficiaries, on a one-to-one basis. Contributors to the Reconstruction Fund will receive a report from ICom about the impact of their donation.

ICom hopes to initially raise $50,000 to benefit 25 families.
