Ahmed Kathrada Discusses Robben Island and Post-Apartheid South Africa
Synergos hosted a dialogue with Ahmed Mohamed Kathrada on November 7, 2008. Mr. Kathrada spent over 26 years in prison for his role in the anti-apartheid movement, 18 of which were on Robben Island with other leaders of the movement such as Nelson Mandela and Tokyo Sexwale, now a member of Synergos' Board.
After South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994, he served as Parliamentary Counselor for President Mandela and more recently has helped educate South Africans and international visitors about the anti-apartheid movement and South Africa's efforts for peace and reconciliation through the creation of a museum at Robben Island.
Mr. Kathrada discussed his experience in prison, in the anti-apartheid movement, and in the new South Africa, as well as his latest book, A Simple Freedom.
